I’ve had the privilege of working with MSMEs at all stages: some are just launching, others are stabilizing, and a few are ready to scale. A common question I hear is:

“Do I really need a business consultant?”

Let’s unpack that with honesty.

👀 When You Might Not Need a Consultant

Yes, there are situations where hiring a consultant might not be necessary — at least not yet:

• You’re in the very early stages and still testing your idea
• You have more time than money, and you’re willing to learn through trial and error
• You’re already part of a solid accelerator or mentorship program
• Your business is stable, and you have internal capacity to plan and execute strategy

If this is you, then it might make more sense to invest in tools, learning platforms, or even a peer support network for now.

📈 But Here’s When a Consultant Becomes a Game-Changer

There comes a point in every business where what got you here won’t get you there. Maybe:

• Sales are inconsistent, and you can’t pinpoint why
• You’re wearing every hat and burning out
• You want to grow, but the “how” feels unclear

• Ask the right (and sometimes hard) questions
• Guide execution, so it’s not just theory but results-driven

It’s not about throwing fancy jargon at you — it’s about bringing clarity, structure, and accountability.

💡 It’s Not Always a Matter of Size — It’s a Matter of Intent

You don’t need to be making millions to work with a consultant.
You just need to be serious about building something sustainable.

In fact, many of the businesses I work with are small, agile, and just need a strategy that fits their reality — not a textbook.

🤝 My Take, As a Consultant for MSMEs in Kenya

I believe in empowering MSMEs to not just survive, but thrive.

Or guiding a startup founder to take the leap from “side hustle” to full-time.

Not every business needs a consultant from day one.
