“What Business Should I Start?” Here’s a Smarter Way to Answer That Question

“What business should I start?”

It’s one of the most common — and most loaded — questions I get as a business and strategy consultant.

In a world filled with side hustle threads, viral success stories, and endless startup ideas, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer — but there is a smarter way to think about it.

Jane, a teacher in Nairobi, started offering after-school tutoring on WhatsApp. She made her first Ksh 10,000 before building a full course. No website, no tech — just solving a real problem.

If you’re in Kenya (or anywhere with a fast-changing market), the right business idea sits at the intersection of:

👉 What you know
👉 What people need
👉 What can scale with today’s tools

Let’s unpack that.

  1. Start With What You Know (or Can Learn Fast)

Too many people jump into industries they don’t understand, chasing trends over traction. That’s risky — and expensive.

Instead, ask:

  • What do I already understand deeply?
  • What have I solved in my own life?
  • What do people naturally ask me for help with?

Your background, skills, network, or even your personal struggles can lead you to a business idea that feels authentic and sustainable.

If you’re great at organizing things? Offer virtual assistant or project management services.
If you’re in HR or recruitment? Build a job board, interview prep service, or career coaching product.

  1. Look for Everyday Problems, Not Big Ideas

You don’t need the next “Uber for X.” You need to solve real problems for specific people.

Here in Kenya, those problems might include:

  • Busy professionals needing meal prep/delivery help
  • Parents struggling with quality home tutoring
  • Small businesses lacking online presence or marketing
  • Youth looking for income but lacking digital skills
  • Farmers needing better market access

Real-world pain points = real business opportunities.

  1. Use the Tools of the Time

This is 2025. You don’t need a storefront. You don’t even need a website to start.

Use:

  • WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok for marketing and sales
  • M-Pesa for payments
  • Canva to design flyers, menus, pricing sheets
  • Selar, Gumroad, Paystack to sell digital products
  • ChatGPT, Notion, and Google Drive to build systems

The best businesses today are tech-enabled, even if they’re not “tech businesses.”

  1. Validate Before You Build

Before you spend money on branding, inventory, or a fancy logo — talk to real people.

  • Will they actually pay for it?
  • Do they describe the problem the way you do?
  • Is your solution urgent, or just “nice to have”?

Sell the concept before you scale the company.

  1. Start Small, Think Long-Term

Your first business may not be the final one — and that’s okay. The goal isn’t to go viral. It’s to learn, earn, and iterate.

Ask:

  • What’s the smallest version of this idea I can launch?
  • How can I test it within 2 weeks?
  • What does success look like in 6 months?

A Few Business Ideas That Still Work in 2025 (If Done Right):

🔹 Content creation for niche audiences
🔹 Freelance services (writing, design, coding, admin)
🔹 Online tutoring / digital courses
🔹 Import/sell specialty products (health, fashion, tools)
🔹 B2B services for SMEs (social media mgmt, training)
🔹 Community-based subscription services (fitness, parenting, coaching)
🔹 Digital marketplaces for local goods or services

The idea is less important than the execution — and your ability to listen, adapt, and deliver value.

Final Thought: You Don’t Need the “Perfect” Idea

Start with a real one.
Start with someone you can help.
Then learn fast, and grow smart.

And if you’re stuck — don’t start with “what business should I start?”
Start with: “What problem can I solve — starting today?”
